Cette étude expose les stades successifs du projet collectif de la Bibliothèque Warburg autour des représentations de Saturne comme sombre génie de la mélancolie. Elle s'intéresse aux publications subséquentes à la conférence d'Aby Warburg de 1913 sur la « Migration des images planétaires » se terminant sur la célèbre gravure Melencolia I : depuis le volume Dürers „Melencolia I”, signé en 1923 par Erwin Panofsky et Fritz Saxl, jusqu'au texte en anglais désormais classique des mêmes auteurs associés à Raymond Klibansky paru tardivement en 1964 sous le titre Saturn and Melancholy, et aux éditions françaises et allemandes finalement publiées par Klibansky en 1989/90. Le chaînon manquant dans cette complexe histoire d’édition, Melancholie und Saturn, prêt en allemand dès 1939, est ici pris pour la première fois en considération.
