Abstract
L’abolition de l’esclavage dans les colonies de la Caraïbe anglophone fut suivie d’un mouvement migratoire de grande ampleur au sein de l’Empire britannique. Tirant profit du vaste réservoir de main-d’œuvre que représentait l’Asie, et en particulier l’Inde, les planteurs des Antilles et de la Guyane britannique organisèrent le remplacement des travailleurs agricoles affranchis en ayant recours à l’engagisme. Le présent article propose d’explorer ce phénomène relativement sous-étudié sous l’angle de l’expérience spécifique des femmes indiennes. Cet article s’intéresse en particulier au processus de modification du statut social des engagées indiennes. La réflexion s’articule autour de deux axes majeurs, à savoir le recrutement en Inde d’une part, et les perspectives d’émancipation dans le contexte caribéen (qui se limitera ici à Trinidad et à la Guyane britannique) d’autre part. Elle mettra en lumière deux discours ambivalents se focalisant sur la question centrale de la liberté.
