Abstract
Le 27 juillet 1967, le ministre des Affaires culturelles du Québec annonce la création future d’un théâtre d’État voué en tout ou en partie au théâtre lyrique. Un comité d’étude présidé par le ténor Léopold Simoneau devra en étudier la faisabilité. Des facteurs déterminants inspirent la démarche ministérielle, soit la représentation discursive de la question de l’opéra au Québec et la montée d’un nouvel interventionnisme d’État. Le rapport Simoneau recommande la création de l’Opéra national du Québec, sous le contrôle et l’égide de l’État. Le gouvernement allait renforcer ainsi son double rôle d’État-mécène et d’État-architecte. Cependant, c’est un nouveau ministre qui lancera l’Opéra du Québec en 1971, lequel ne sera pas un théâtre national, mais un organisme autonome et sans but lucratif. En 1975, le gouvernement suspendra les activités de la compagnie pour des raisons administratives et financières. L’avenir de l’opéra au Québec se trouvait de nouveau dans l’impasse.
