Ce travail s’interroge sur les particularités esthétiques et épistémologiques d’un opuscule intitulé « Le Monde des détails », publié par naturaliste Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire vers 1822. Ce texte étrange, à la fois autobiographique et biographique, est consacré à l’adolescence de Bonaparte. Cet écrit résume les vues scientifiques du général lors de son expédition en Égypte et révèle un savant décidé à rapprocher les propos du futur empereur de ses propres théories unitaires sur la création. Cette tentative d’assimilation se comprend à la lumière des débats savants qui sévissent alors à l’Académie des sciences. On y accuse Geoffroy de basculer vers la métaphysique au lieu de s’en tenir aux « faits ». Or, le savant trouve contraignantes les théories positivistes ambiantes, qui minimisent le rôle de l’imagination dans la modélisation. En invoquant le pragmatique militaire dans son récit de vie, Geoffroy tente de faire valoir les perspectives cosmogoniques qu’ils partagent tous deux.
