Abstract
Time-lapse crosshole seismic data were acquired at the Mallik field, Northwest Territories (Canada) as a part of the 2002 Mallik GasHydrate Production Research Well Program.Waveform tomography was used to form high-resolution quantitative images of the seismic velocity and attenuation from the first repeat survey, using frequencies between 100 Hz and 1000 Hz. A preprocessing flow was applied to the waveform data that includes tube-wave suppression, low-pass filtering, spatial subsampling, time-windowing, and amplitude equalization. The starting model for the waveform tomography was obtained from picked traveltimes by anisotropic velocity tomography. The gas-hydrate-bearing sediments are imaged as laterally continuous, high-velocity anomalies; they also are characterized by an apparent increase in attenuation. Individual layers as thin as a few metres are resolved on the velocity images, and can be followed across the target region. The images reveal subtle lateral changes in velocity and in the attenuation factor.
