L’engagement scolaire est un prédicteur important de la réussite scolaire et un facteur de protection contre le décrochage. L’engagement cognitif combiné aux buts de maîtrise plutôt qu’aux buts de performance des élèves rendent compte d’un apprentissage autorégulé qui permet à l’élève une meilleure compréhension de la matière et des aspirations scolaires plus grandes. Plusieurs facteurs peuvent favoriser l’apprentissage autorégulé de l’élève dont le sentiment d’efficacité de l’enseignant. Cette influence potentielle pourrait être expliquée par la mise en place par l’enseignant du climat motivationnel de la classe axé sur la maîtrise de la matière plutôt que la performance. Dans cette étude, les données de 373 élèves et 38 enseignants d’écoles primaires en milieux défavorisés à Montréal ont été étudiées à l’aide d’un devis longitudinal et des analyses de cheminement multiniveaux. Les résultats montrent qu’un haut sentiment d’efficacité de la part de l’enseignant prédit l’adhésion des élèves aux buts de maîtrise. Il prédit aussi la mise en place d’un climat motivationnel axé sur la maîtrise de la matière ce qui influence à la baisse les buts de performance des élèves. Ces résultats sont cependant marginalement significatifs et aucun lien n’a été observé entre le sentiment d’efficacité de l’enseignant et l’engagement cognitif des élèves dans cette étude.
