Abstract
A global commodity chain is made up of all the processes associated with the production of one good or service, including manufacturing, consumption, design, retailing, marketing, advertising, and disposal. The global commodity chain (GCC) approach traces the relationships between these sites, exploring how the production of goods and services both reflects and also reproduces patterns of uneven development in the global economy. This entry reviews the literature on global commodity chains and later variations of this work, known as global value chain (GVC) approaches.
