Abstract

The study area is located in the Carboniferous Maritimes Basin, which consists of sedimentary rock sequences covering parts of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Extensive field-work was carried out during the summer of 2001 to initiate the characterization of the main aquifers in the basin, including: a regional water-level survey; hydraulic testing; drift, rock, and groundwater sampling; installation of shallow monitoring wells; and surface and borehole geophysical surveys. A preliminary assessment of the groundwater resources in the basin is underway based upon existing information and new fieldwork results. More specifically, a piezometric map displaying regional groundwater flowlines has been prepared along with a series of assessments regarding the geological context and the hydraulic properties of distinct rock units and surficial deposits.
