Structural evolution of Tertiary rocks on Judge Daly Promontory

Abstract
Tertiary deposits on Judge Daly Promontory allow for the study of unequivocal Eurekan structures. As a result of their position adjacent to Nares Strait, the structural evolution of the Tertiary strata provides insight into the kinematics of the proposed Wegener Fault and Greenland plate, assumed to be situated offshore in the strait. The geometry of the deformation, as well as the analysis of faults and shear planes, suggests a twostage structural evolution of convergent tectonics on Judge Daly Promontory during the Tertiary. The pattern of steeply dipping fault planes on the promontory as well as in Tertiary rocks indicates an episode of sinistral strike-slip tectonics in the late Paleocene to Early Eocene. This phase was followed by northwest - southeast contraction (Early to Middle Eocene) resulting in renewed or continued activation of the pre-existing faults, and southeast-directed thrusting combined with left-lateral shear. The structural evolution during the Tertiary can be linked with plate-tectonic models for the Canadian Arctic region.
