Pyrobitumen associated with uranium ores of Athabasca Basin unconformity-type deposits has been proposed to form during mineralization by hydrothermal alteration of basement graphite. Textural studies indicate that basement graphite was physically altered by mineralizing fluids, but was not involved in pyrobitumen formation. As pyrobitumen (and its parent petroleum) includes and crosscuts ore, it postdated mineralization and had no role in the initiation and localization of unconformity uranium deposits. Petrographic and geochemical data indicate that the Mesoproterozoic Douglas Formation black shale generated petroleum in the past and sourced the pyrobitumen associated with the deposits. The older episode of petroleum generation and migration was overprinted by crude oils related to Athabasca tar sands (during Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary) that descended into the Athabasca Group and basement rocks, and subsequently degraded to solid to tarry bitumens in a manner analogous to the proposed earlier migration of petroleum from the Douglas Formation.
