Abstract
Jusqu'au dernier quart du xixe siecle, les escaliers publics de la ville de Quebec constituent de simples liens fonctionnels necessaires pour relier la Basse et la Haute-Ville entre elles. Toutefois, le remplacement par des structures en fer et en fonte des escaliers Lepine, du Faubourg, Casse-Cou et Charles-Baillairge dans les annees 1880 et 1890 amene, par contraste, une nouvelle dimension symbolique particulierement interessante pour l'histoire de l'art. Reconstruits selon les plans de l'architecte et ingenieur Charles Baillairge, ces escaliers s'inscrivent dans une veritable esthetique urbaine de la fin du xixe siecle; ils doivent etre compris a la fois comme un moyen privilegie pour la representation et la legitimation des elus dans l'espace public et comme une manifestation eloquente de la modernisation de la ville de Quebec.
