Abstract
The reinvestigation of two supracrustal tongues representing southeasterly extensions of the Wakeham Group, eastern Grenville Province, reveals conclusive evidence of volcanism in this Mesoproterozoic essentially detrital sequence. These volcanic rocks comprise a variety of intermediate to felsic lapilli tuf and lapillistone intercalated with massive or banded felsic beds of uncertain origin, some akin to flow-banded rhyolite. In the lapillistone, elon- gated wispy fragments with quartz mosaics flow around angular to rounded lapilli and resemble vesicular pumice. Finely laminated, chaotic injections repeatedly intrude one tuf. The adjacent arenite units are interbedded with nodular muscovite gneiss and locally with marble, garnetiferous hornblendite, garnetite, and magnetite-bearing coticule. Coticule with yellowish to dark pink garnets outcrops as in situ rafts within the adjacent granite. The asso- ciation of coarse felsic pyroclastic rocks with quartz-feldspar porphyry and magnetite-bearing coticule within metasedimentary rocks constitutes a geological context favourable for base-metal exploration.
