Abstract

Audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) data collected as part of the EXTECH IV project revealed the subsurface conductivity structure in the Shea Creek exploration area and the McArthur River uranium mining camp, northern Saskatchewan. The inversion of the McArthur River AMT data detects subsurface features to more than 500 mdepth related to basement graphitic conductors and faulting postdating Athabasca Group deposition, argillic alteration, fracturing, sulphide mineralization, and silicification of the overlying sandstone. The Shea Creek survey inversion results agree with what is known about the local geological setting in the regional sense; i.e. that the conductive feature corresponds to shallow westerly dipping sequences of graphite-rich Archean metasedimentary rocks. An analysis of synthetic responses generated from borehole resistivity logs collected in theMcArthurRiver area further substantiates that the audio-magnetotelluric technique is a useful surface investigative technique for delineating graphitic features in the basement and zones of silicification in the overlying siliciclastic sedimentary rocks.
