Abstract
Nous étudions la dynamique du travail à temps partiel et sa contribution aux ajustements cycliques du marché du travail français. Nous montrons que le temps partiel interagit peu avec l’emploi à plein temps, et que ses évolutions de court terme sont principalement expliquées par les transitions impliquant le chômage et l’inactivité. Le recours au travail à temps partiel comme outil de flexibilité interne permettant de faire face à une baisse conjoncturelle de l’activité est donc limité. Nous mettons ces résultats en perspective en les reliant à plusieurs caractéristiques institutionnelles du marché du travail français et à leurs évolutions récentes.
