Abstract
LeJournal de l’Atlantiqueest un quotidien distribué dès 1906 sur les paquebots de la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). Sa ligne éditoriale épouse des lignes maritimes. Ces deux entités conjuguent leurs imaginaires empreints de modernité, via une technique nouvelle de communication longue distance, la radiotélégraphie. Ainsi, leJournal de l’Atlantiqueest d’abord le réceptacle de relations composites avec des techniques relevant de matérialités et d’acteurs divers : à bord dessteamers, l’atelier de composition et l’imprimerie sont liés au radiotélégraphe, qui capte des nouvelles des deux continents. Il ouvre ensuite à une temporalité singulière, les lecteurs s’attachent au journal le temps d’une traversée et l’expérience est toujours « une autre première fois 1 ». LeJournal de l’Atlantiqueest enfin un révélateur de voyages qui sont aussi matière à publicité et à consommation de masse. C’est en effet une filiale de la Compagnie Marconi qui édite leJournal de l’Atlantique: cette dernière vend ainsi des radiotélégraphes, des informations et des publicités pour distribuer, en fin de compte, un journal attachant parce qu’attaché à un imaginaire de la modernité fait de communications sans fil et ininterrompues avec le monde.
