Un soir ou vous n'aurez pas envie de devenir un dormeur parmi tant d'autres, ouvrez le dernier roman de Michele Matteau. Plongez dans Avant que ne tombe la nuit, suite de Du Chaos pour une etoile, et retrouvez parmi les personnages sortis de l'imaginaire de cette auteure prolifique, un Leandre angoisse happe par l'autre versant de sa vieillesse. Mais qui est Leandre ? Un enseignant a la retraite qui, mu par une curiosite insatiable et une generosite debordante, veille sur le village franco-ontarien de Villery. Au fil des pages, on se prend de sympathie pour cet homme de 73 ans qui cherche a comprendre les faits et gestes de ses semblables. Il veille sur son amoureuse devenue un peu lointaine, Florence Santerre, animatrice a Radio-Canada, sur le vieux docteur Ladislas Vermes qui entretient un cimetiere sous la forme de pots de violettes africaines, sur l'infirmiere Seraphine Akimana et son fils adolescent dont l'arrivee a Villery force a l'ouverture certains esprits etroits. Leandre est le pivot de cette histoire resolument moderne ou un village isole se voit rejoint par les problemes de la planete. Leandre ecrit son journal, s'occupe de son jardin, mais il est avant tout curieux des autres. Il les observe avec lucidite et les respecte avec tendresse peu importe leur generation, leur race, leur style de vie. Il est le maitre de l'agora, et l'on prend un grand plaisir a le suivre, un mot apres l'autre, lui qui fonce, en les redoutant, vers des lendemains qui dechantent.
