Abstract
There are differences in listening ability among students that are often perplexing to teachers. This entry highlights some of the variables, with particular emphasis on L2 vocabulary, prior knowledge, auditory discrimination, and metacognitive awareness of listening. The research base for each of these variables is briefly outlined and pedagogical implications are discussed.
