In/hospitality and Un/inhabitability: Three Scenes in the Work of Lido Pimienta

Abstract
This article drops into three scenes in the work of Colombian-Canadian singer, musician, and artist Lido Pimienta: her one-woman show We’re in a Non-Relationship Relationship, her musical performance (and the ensuing controversy) at the 2017 Halifax Pop Explosion festival, and her collaboration with A Tribe Called Red on the song and music video for “The Light II.” Moving from a scene of erotic attachment to a consideration of attachments to the nation, this article explores how inhospitality produces conditions of uninhabitability for minoritarian subjects. Thinking with the work of Lauren Berlant, Judith Butler, Fred Moten, and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, this article ultimately argues that Pimienta’s complex (re)negotiations of power emerge as ways of making and holding more capacious space(s) for living.
