Abstract
We provide an overview of mental disorders of childhood and adolescence and key issues related to this topic. We first discuss the significance of mental health problems in youth and the role of multiple interacting influences in shaping adaptive and maladaptive patterns of behavior. This is followed by a general overview of childhood disorders and related conditions as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–Fourth Edition–Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000), recognizing that revisions to this diagnostic system are underway for DSM-V. We next consider examples of three general types of problems in youth: externalizing disorders, internalizing disorders, and pervasive developmental disorders. We illustrate current issues and approaches to these disorders by focusing on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorders as examples. In doing so we consider the main characteristics, epidemiology, developmental course, associated features, proposed causes, and an integrative developmental model for each of these disorders. We conclude with a discussion of current issues and future directions, including definitional issues, the role of context, comorbidity, prevalence, gender differences, socioeconomic status, ethnicity and culture, understanding causal processes, family influences, continuities and discontinuities, risk and resilience, and implications for treatment.
Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Full frame distilled prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
