Abstract
Following on from the success of MDS 2004 in Toronto and MDS 2005 in Grenoble, the 3rd International Middleware Doctoral Symposium (MDS 2006) was held in Melbourne on November 28, 2006. The symposium provided a forum for doctoral students to present their work and obtain guidance from mentors, as well as to provide contact with other students at a similar stage in their careers. The goal of the symposium was to expose students to helpful criticism before their thesis defence, and to foster discussions related to future career directions.The symposium attracted submissions of a very high quality, ensuring a competitive selection process. Each submission was carefully reviewed by three members of the Program Committee. Based on the reviews, six doctoral students were selected to present their work.
