Nous nous inscrivons dans le courant Early Algebra en soutenant que des connaissances et des raisonnements développés par les élèves en début de collège en France (11-12 ans) en arithmétique peuvent faciliter la transition de l’arithmétique à l’algèbre ou au contraire y faire obstacle. Nous définissons des critères pour analyser le rapport personnel des élèves à l’arithmétique en début de 5e (12 ans), avant l’entrée dans l’algèbre. En nous plaçant dans le cadre de la théorie anthropologique, nous définissons ensuite des praxéologies (Chevallard, 1999) pour repérer la signification et le rôle que les élèves donnent à l’égalité, aux expressions numériques, aux propriétés des opérations, dont la distributivité, et au raisonnement analytique. Nous présentons l’évaluation de début de 5e conçue dans ce cadre et analysons les réponses des élèves, puis ouvrons des perspectives sur les conditions d’un enseignement favorisant l’entrée dans l’algèbre.
