Abstract
The first season of the Canadian television crime series Durham County (2007) is unusual in its all-female creative team, and in its use of genre markers and conventions to offer perspectives on social subjectivity and gender that are not usually on display in commercial television drama. It is also unusual in its very high quality, in large part the result of subtle and complex understandings of the existing landscape of genre cinema and subversive deployment of the elements of that landscape. The essay surveys some important aspects of the debates about genre, and locates Durham County within those debates, with special emphasis on the mixture and interpenetration of genre types within the series’ single unified narrative.
