Abstract
Abstract This chapter presents an overview of contemporary fuel cell technology. After an introduction to the fuel cell and its history, fuel cell theories are described, including the principles, thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics, laying the foundations of a basic understanding of fuel cell technologies. The different types of fuel cell, such as PEMFC, SOFC, AFC, PAFC, and MCFC, are then described, and the state‐of‐the‐art components, systems, and performances of each fuel cell type are discussed. Cell applications are then outlined, including stationary power generation, transportation, backup power, and small portable power applications. Finally, the major challenges and barriers to fuel cell commercialization are summarized.
