Abstract
Dans l’abbatiale Saint-Faron de Meaux s’élevait jadis un monument sculpté du xiie siècle, connu sous l’appellation de « tombeau d’Ogier le Danois ». Il se composait de deux gisants de moine placés sous un enfeu. Bien que son iconographie ne fasse aucunement référence aux légendes épiques, la tradition locale, transmise notamment par dom Mabillon, y reconnaissait le célèbre héros des chansons de geste et son écuyer Benoît. Ce monument constitue donc un bel exemple des diversités d’interprétations auxquelles peut se prêter une œuvre ; le glissement du sacré au profane est d’autant plus intéressant qu’il semble avoir été encouragé par l’abbaye elle-même.
