Abstract
Après Étienne Parent, Edmé Rameau de Saint-Père (La France aux colonies. Études sur le développement de la race française hors de l’Europe. Les Français en Amérique. Acadiens et Canadiens, Paris, A. Jouby, 1859), l’abbé Henri-Raymond Casgrain (1831-1904) (DBC, XII : 194-196) donne toute son ampleur à l’idée d’une destinée particulière du Canada français en Amérique. Cette « vocation » de la « race française » en Amérique sera spiritualiste, religieuse, catholique et française à l’opposé du matérialisme, du protestantisme et de l’anglais des États-Unis. Le thème sera repris tout au long du XIXe siècle et dans le fameux discours de Mgr Louis-Adolphe Paquet de 1902 sur « la vocation de la race française en Amérique » (voir Yvan Lamonde, MgrLouis-Adolphe Pâquet, Montréal, Fides, 1972, p. 56-60). Ce nationalisme conservateur associe résolument foi et langue comme composantes de l’identité québécoise.
