DE HISTÉRICAS A NINFOMANÍACAS: IMAGENS DA MULHER E DA SEXUALIDADE FEMININA NA FICÇÃO BRASILEIRA DA BELLE ÉPOQUE

Abstract
O final do século XIX e início do XX no Brasil assistiu à produção abundante de contos e romances que abordaram a relação entre indivíduo, sexualidade e sociedade. A mulher, concebida como detentora de uma condição doentia e de um temperamento nervoso, pareceu ser a tônica da formação de personagens mórbidas, monstruosas ou loucas, cuja possibilidade de manifestação sexual apareceu nas narrativas de forma tortuosa e mortificante em resposta à repressão do corpo. Desse modo, temos por objetivo analisar a aparição de heroínas histéricas em cinco personagens da prosa de ficção finissecular, de cunho simbolista e naturalista: Hortência (1888) de Marques de Carvalho; Ruth do conto “Caso de Ruth” presente em Ânsia Eterna (1903) de Júlia Lopes de Almeida; Dona Carolina ou Carola em Bom-Crioulo (1895) de Adolfo Caminha; Jessie do conto “Paixão Lésbica” presente em Torturas do dezejo (1922) de Carlos de Vasconcelos; e Pérola Marina do conto “Tempestades” de Gilka Machado. Entre frígidas e ninfomaníacas, essas imagens femininas revelam e contestam, sobretudo, o imaginário médico-cientificista da belle époque, dentro de um discurso que prescrevia as formas de uma sexualidade sadia, e entendia as mulheres como entes possuidores de um sistema neurológico demasiadamente suscetível à influência hereditária, familiar e, principalmente, do útero, o qual poderia, segundo a crença e o medo da época, dominar o cérebro, levando à histeria e à loucura.
