A partir du tableau de La lutte avec l’ange de Delacroix, l’œuvre complète d’Henry Bauchau est passée en revue pour y repérer les combats intérieurs, les « scènes capitales » et les principales figures imaginaires et réelles impliquées : Œdipe, Jocaste, Antigone, Diotime, les « Rois-mères », la figure du frère, mais Théo Léger et Blanche Reverchon, entre autres.
