Abstract
Dinamismo, dilatazione, estensione, dualità tra centralità e decentralità sono tratti caratteristici di nuove forme progettuali di spazio, che si impongono a Roma tra Cinquecento e il Seicento. Il fenomeno ha inizio con il Manierismo, che anticipa e prepara il discorso Barocco, sia nella reinterpretazione dell’eredità classica che nel concepire lo spazio come un laboratorio di ricerca. Ne sono esempi il Bosco di Bomarzo, i Giardini di illa d’Este a Tivoli e il Casino di Pio IV nel Vaticano, progettati intorno alla metà del Cinquecento da Pirro Ligorio. In essi l’elemento naturale, con la mediazione di quello mitologico, trova una nuova interpretazione ed espressione spaziale. Con la conclusione del Concilio di Trento nel 1563 la Chiesa adotta un insieme di misure di rinnovamento spirituale, teologico e liturgico. A Roma durante il suo Pontificato (1585-1590) il Papa Sisto V intraprende, scala gigante, un’opera di sbancamento e di livellazione modellata su quella fatta a Villa d’Este, trasformando tessuto urbano di Roma, ancora medievale, in quello di una città moderna degna del suo ruolo di Città Santa. Con l’apporto dei grandi architetti del primo barocco nell’arco di pochi decenni Roma, non più il centro indiscusso della cristianità, acquista un nuovo ruolo, diventando teatro del mondo.
