Cet article propose une analyse des romans d’Édouard Glissant et d’Antonine Maillet qui traitent de cet exercice périlleux que constitue l’effort d’une reconstruction identitaire sur fond de dépossession. Le quatrième siècle de Glissant et Pélagie-la-Charrette de Maillet, oeuvres représentatives d’expériences particulières vécues par les francophonies américaines, s’efforcent de rendre compte des injustices tout en développant une réflexion tendue vers l’ouverture à cette étonnante métamorphose américaine, qui permet d’accepter – ou même seulement de se soumettre à – la rencontre, parfois douloureuse, de l’Autre en ce continent vu comme meurtrier et prometteur.
