Abstract
The fusion of the two Canadian right-wing parties in 2003 marked a turning point in the history of Canadian conservatism, and on a wider level revealed changes in Canadian political culture. The principal change involves the weakening of the historically dominant Red Tory current in favour of a conservatism attached to the doctrines of economic liberalism. This change is illustrated using a model inspired by the work of Louis Dumont and the concept of rising individualism. The paper goes on to deal with the changes in religious influence that help to explain the transformation of Canadian conservatism.
