Abstract
Dans l’Histoire des Sévarambes (1677), utopie romanesque présentée comme un ouvrage d’histoire et de géographie, Denis Veiras recourt aux tropes attendus des récits de voyages, notamment celui de l’autopsie – le témoignage oculaire – pour avérer son récit. Toutefois, malgré sa prétention à la véracité, le récit est sans cesse ébranlé de l’intérieur, déstabilisé par les différentes voix qui le tissent et qui mettent en cause l’unité épistémologique du témoin ; par la présence du ouï-dire au coeur de la relation de première main ; par les éléments dystopiques qui minent subtilement ce monde parfait. Ces failles de crédibilité affectent tant l’ethnographie que l’historiographie de la relation du capitaine Siden et la frappent d’incertitude, un peu comme les Histoires d’Hérodote, l’inventeur de la notion d’autoptes, de témoin oculaire, et constamment soupçonné de mensonge dans son témoignage paradigmatique sur l’Égypte ancienne.
