En los anales del Judo latinoamericano habrá que incluir, por derecho propio, al primer campeón olímpico del continente americano en este arte marcial: el cubano Héctor Rodríguez Torres, me­dallista de oro en la división de 63 Kg en los Juegos de Montreal’76 y miembro de los Salones de la Fama del Judo Americano y Mundial. Licenciado en Cultura Física con una fructífera trayectoria como atleta y preparador de alto rendimiento, desde 1982 hasta 1997 integró los colectivos técnicos de las selecciones nacionales cubanas, con excelentes resultados en la arena internacional, y desde 1999 está vinculado con el Alto Rendimiento de la Federación Española de Judo.
