Abstract
C’est durant la Crise de 1929 que le Parti communiste du Canada connut son apogée. Au Québec, où ses membres francophones furent relativement peu nombreux, le communisme fit face à un anticommunisme virulent, dont la loi dite « du cadenas » de Maurice Duplessis, élu en 1936, fut le versant politique et le prétexte à une chasse aux communistes. Contestée en justice, cette loi fut déclarée ultra vires en raison de son non-respect des libertés civiles. Cette loi associera l’autonomie politique de Duplessis à un mépris des droits et libertés des citoyens et nourrira des soupçons tenaces et durables à l’endroit du nationalisme québécois de toute tendance quant à son attachement réel aux droits individuels.
