Abstract
Cet article tente d’intégrer à l’histoire sociale et économique de Desjardins l’histoire de l’endettement bancaire des particuliers au Québec au cours du XXe siècle. Desjardins est restitué dans le contexte d’économie politique au sein duquel l’institution est née et a évolué. Notre analyse fait appel aux concepts de l’École française de la Régulation pour offrir une périodisation cohérente de l’histoire du capitalisme et de l’endettement et des études foucaldiennes sur la gouvernementalité pour comprendre la dette comme rapport social. Nous portons une attention particulière à l’évolution significative des rapports entre Desjardins et les pouvoirs publics à travers lesquels l’institution financière a réfléchi sa place dans la socio-économie québécoise.
