Nucleosome positioning in the genome is influenced by sequence encoded periodical dinucleotide patterns. Different nucleosome positioning patterns have different affinities for nucleosomes. From correlation with previous results, we hypothesize that nucleosome DNA sequences in yeast and similarly simple organisms are characterized by stronger patterns, while more complex organisms have more flexible and less stable nucleosome patterns. We correlate promoter sequences from organisms of varying complexity with known nucleosomal positioning patterns of varying affinity. We show that lower organisms such as yeast tend to match more stable nucleosomal patterns, while organisms of higher complexity such as humans feature promoters that match more unstable patterns.
