La majorité des études traitant des entreprises familiales se sont principalement focalisées sur les facteurs clés du succès de ce type d’organisations, délaissant ainsi la problématique de la défaillance financière dans ce contexte particulier. En s’appuyant sur le cadre théorique du patrimoine socioémotionnel, cette recherche tente de combler le manque de réflexion à ce sujet en examinant si le degré d’exposition à une situation de détresse financière est dépendant du caractère familial d’une PME et comment l’exposition à une telle situation permet d’expliquer les différences de performance entre les PME familiales et non familiales. Les résultats obtenus sur la base d’un échantillon de 246 PME belges démontrent que les PME familiales sont plus susceptibles d’être exposées à une situation de détresse financière. De plus, les PME familiales performent mieux que leurs homologues non familiales lorsqu’elles sont en situation de détresse financière alors qu’elles présentent les plus faibles niveaux de performance lorsqu’elles sont financièrement saines.
