Abstract
Les déformations crâniennes représentent des pratiques très anciennes et répandues dans pratiquement toutes les sociétés depuis la plus haute Antiquité. L’Amérique du Sud est l’une des aires géographiques où elles furent le plus largement mises en œuvre, particulièrement dans les Andes. Au xvie siècle, les Espagnols s’en étonnèrent fortement et décrivirent avec force détails ces usages qui leur semblaient si étranges. Dans cet article, nous axerons plus spécifiquement notre étude sur les techniques utilisées dans l’empire inca pour façonner les crânes pour au final tenter de mieux comprendre et analyser la symbolique esthétique, religieuse, sociale, ethnique, politique de telles coutumes profondément ancrées dans les sociétés andines, ce qui explique pourquoi les autorités espagnoles luttèrent férocement contre les déformations encore vivaces au xviie siècle.
