Dans les actions sur la nature, les savoirs écologiques sont décisifs et source de légitimation. Les raisons pour lesquelles certains savoirs sont favorisés ou éludés sont cependant rarement explicitées dans les discours. Cet article vise à clarifier les liens qui existent entre le déploiement historique des actions, les savoirs mobilisés et les conceptions de la nature sous-jacentes dans trois modes d’action clés : la planification de la conservation, l’évaluation d’impact environnemental et la restauration écologique, prenant place au sein d’une steppe méditerranéenne (La Crau, France). L’analyse des discours montre que les savoirs s’articulent différemment aux actions selon le contexte de leur institutionnalisation. De plus, ces savoirs sont jugés plus ou moins pertinents pour l’action selon les conceptions de la nature collectives et individuelles des acteurs impliqués. La nature est conçue parfois comme coévolution entre les activités humaines traditionnelles et la biodiversité (en conservation), parfois comme liste d’espèces protégées ou patrimoniales (dans l’évaluation d’impact environnemental), et parfois comme écosystèmes fonctionnels en réseaux (en restauration écologique). La mobilisation des savoirs écologiques, pourtant prépondérants dans les actions sur la nature est guidée par des facteurs contextuels et des conceptions de la nature non formalisées.
