L’Institut canadien de Montréal fut sans contredit le centre intellectuel le plus prestigieux du Québec au XIXe siècle. En plus d’organiser des conférences et des réunions littéraires, il mit à la disposition de ses membres une bibliothèque qui se voulait accessible à toutes les classes de la société. Pourtant, après l’analyse des catalogues de 1852, 1857 et 1870, on constate que la collection s’adressait plutôt aux membres des professions libérales, les oeuvres politiques et littéraires l’emportant nettement par le nombre sur les ouvrages traitant du commerce et des métiers. Cet inventaire de catalogues fournit de nombreuses indications sur les méthodes de classement et de repérage pratiquées dans les bibliothèques québécoises au XIXe siècle.
