Abstract
L’idée de réseau dans le contexte des bibliothèques publiques québécoises n’est pas récente puisqu’elle a été, à maintes reprises, abordée depuis les années 1940 dans différentes recherches théoriques. Cette notion de réseau est ici esquissée brièvement dans une perspective historique et les expériences ou études sur l’automatisation sont évoquées comme un moyen technologique au service des réseaux. Quelques bibliothèques publiques québécoises ont informatisé des services publics en collaboration avec le service informatique de la municipalité. La gamme des services informatisés est sensiblement la même dans ces bibliothèques (prêt, statistiques, etc.) et elle souffre de problèmes identiques. Par contre, les bibliothèques publiques anglophones ont informatisé les services techniques plutôt que les services publics. Les bibliothèques centrales de prêt (BCP), quant à elles, pourront améliorer la variété des services offerts aux localités de faible densité de population en automatisant le montage.
