Les exigences de la recherche théâtrale, l’avènement des mass-media et la spécialisation accrue des fonctions reliées à l’organisation et à l’exploitation des collections théâtrales ont favorisé l’intégration des ressources documentaires issues de ou portant sur le spectacle théâtral et l’implantation d’une nouvelle technique d’analyse particulière à la documentation théâtrale. Cet article tente de cerner le développement et l’état actuel de ces collections, de définir l’objet de la documentologie théâtrale, les fonctions, la nature, les techniques de collecte, de conservation, de traitement, de diffusion et d’animation des fonds de documentation théâtrale.
