Les expériences de télécopie réalisées au cours des années 1960 sur des appareils commerciaux de première génération ont démontré l’insuffisance de la technologie pour transmettre les documents des bibliothèques avec une fidélité suffisante. Une expérience récente de l’Université du Québec faite avec un télécopieur de seconde génération démontre que ce nouveau type d’appareil rencontre les exigences du prêt entre bibliothèques quant à la qualité des copies; les débits sont toutefois encore trop lents pour en généraliser l’usage à des fins de prêts entre bibliothèques. Il faudra attendre une troisième génération d’appareils pour que cette technique puisse s’implanter réellement dans les bibliothèques.
