Faste période pour la bibliophilie au Québec, le dernier quart du XIX e siècle fut surtout marqué par la contribution originale du Québécois Philéas Gagnon. Celui-ci, par sa détermination et son organisation, a su, avec des moyens limités, élaborer et structurer un réseau d’acquisitions dont les principaux rouages furent : les ventes aux enchères, le dépouillement et l’émission de catalogues de vente, la publication d’un catalogue raisonné de sa bibliothèque et, bien sûr, les habituels processus d’échanges et de dons. Les ramifications multiples, tant canadiennes qu’étrangères, des divers canaux d’approvisionnement de ce bibliophile surprennent d’autant plus qu’il ne s’agissait pour lui que d’un loisir. Cette oeuvre individuelle de rassemblement et de mise en valeur du patrimoine en imprimés québécois suscite encore aujourd’hui l’admiration, tant par son envergure que par sa gratuité.
