Abstract
Les méthodes d’auto-apprentissage suscitent de plus en plus d’intérêt depuis qu’on entrevoit leurs bénéfices et surtout qu’on sait qu’un nombre croissant d’adultes les adoptent. Dans un premier temps, l’auteur veut donner une définition du concept qui sous-tend ces méthodes, avant d’en aborder l’évolution historique. Par des illustrations d’auto-apprentissage tirées du milieu éducatif et à travers le processus de l’auto-apprentissage, il essaie de cerner l’aide recherchée par l’auto-apprenant. Passant ensuite de la théorie à la pratique en se servant des bibliothèques comme champ d’application, il parle de l’expérience américaine de l’« Adult Independant Learning Project », en tirant une description du rôle du bibliothécaire comme facilitateur et un aperçu de l’entraînement nécessaire à l’accomplissement de ce rôle, pour terminer par une analyse des possibilités d’implantation de tels projets dans des milieux comme les cégeps au Québec ou les collèges communautaires en Ontario.
