Abstract
Carole Pateman démontre, dans son ouvrage intitulé Le contrat sexuel (1988), que le contrat social des Lumières reposait sur une subordination des femmes par le contrat de mariage, pierre angulaire refoulée du contrat social. L’auteure propose d’en tirer les conséquences d’un point de vue philosophique quant aux notions de subjectivité rationnelle et de raison autonome, et elle tente de comprendre l’échec systématique de la philosophie moderne à produire une réelle autonomie. Par là, elle cherche aussi à comprendre comment la philosophie moderne a créé une catégorie arbitraire, celle des « femmes », négatif de la rationalité moderne – et comment y résister.
