Abstract
The chapter discusses the high importance of the neighbourhood people live in, particularly in old age and how older adults can be involved in neighbourhood development. Most people want to live self-determined in their familiar living environment for as long as possible. How this can be achieved and how older people can participate in improving the quality of life in their communities and living environment is explored through the example of two actual neighbourhoods in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The article describes how participation is achieved on the ground and what success factors and barriers exist for such participative neighbourhood development processes.
