Sie gelten als Philosophen, die lieber Literaten sein wollen, als Außenseiter im akademischen Betrieb, als schön schreibende Sonderlinge. Von Montaigne bis Cioran zieht sich – so gesehen – eine langausgezogene Linie ständiger Weltabwendung. Die Philosophie hat in der Moderne zuweilen den Schulterschluss gesucht, vor allem dann, wenn sie selbst nicht mehr weiter wusste. Schopenhauer etwa macht sie zu Geschwistern im Geiste des Pessimismus, und noch Derrida schätzt ihre bodenlose Ratlosigkeit. Neuere Literatur zur Moralistik will sich von dieser Versagensrhetorik lösen. Die Skepsis angesichts der modernen Welt sei schließlich kein Selbstzweck. Sie soll den Blick schärfen für vergangene Ideale und im Anschluss daran die Welt wieder verlässlicher machen – und vor allem: menschenfreundlicher. Kurz: das Programm eines neuen Realismus, jedoch übertragen ins Politisch-Praktische.
