Abstract
A growing number of immigrant children and youth are learning English in the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom, the sites of much recent immigration. This entry considers some of the theoretical and empirical implications of teaching English to immigrant youth in the current era of accountability and standards‐based curriculum. The status of English relative to the home language in society, the in‐ and out‐of‐school use of language by immigrant youth, and the role of the native language in teaching and learning English are important considerations which underpin policy and practice. Recommendations for practice are considered in light of historical trends in the educational response to multilingual immigrant youth.
