Sobrepeso y Obesidad, Anemia e Inseguridad Alimentaria en Estudiantes de la Universidad de la Cañada: Un Estudio Descriptivo

Abstract
Overweight, obesity and anemia are prevalent problems in Oaxaca. University students are one of the sectors of the population with the highest level of education in a country. However, apparently they do not escape from the aforementioned problems. At the beginning of the university stage, young people are ending adolescence and several changes related to eating habits take place. This includes the excessive consumption of energy, omission of meals, increased consumption of fast food, and following inadequate and unvaried diets. For this reason, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight, obesity, anemia and food insecurity in students aged 18 to 29 years from “Universidad de la Canada” located in Teotitlan de Flores, Magon, Oaxaca. We evaluated 120 students with an average age of 21.3 years ± 1.62, of which 64.2% were women and 35.8% men. Socioeconomic level, nutritional status based on the body mass index (BMI), fat percentage, visceral fat, prevalence of anemia and food insecurity were determined. Descriptive statistics and comparisons between groups were made by sex, overweight and obesity with the chi square, t student and Mann Whitney U tests. Results indicated that the most prevalent socioeconomic level in this group was D with 33.3%, classified as the second sector with the lowest quality of life in the population. 35% of students suffer from overweight and obesity. The prevalence of anemia is 9.2% and 84.2% present some degree of food insecurity. The conclusion reached is that overweight, obesity, anemia and food insecurity are manifest problems in the university population. However, the evaluation of other variables such as dietary assessment and a larger sample size is required in order to establish a broader profile in the nutritional and health status of the students. The present study provides information that justifies the implementation of nutritional intervention programs in this age group.
