espanolSe busca en este articulo contribuir al conocimiento de la sociedad de la antigua provincia de Maracaibo, abordando la cultura material en la parroquia rural Inmaculada Concepcion de La Canada durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX a la escala del espacio construido de las viviendas domesticas. Entendiendo cultura material como la expresion tangible de la cultura, creadora de significados y activa en la constitucion de las relaciones sociales, se investigan las tipologias constructivas, funcionales, formales y sintacticas de las viviendas domesticas de la parroquia, y se analizan las relaciones mutuamente constitutivas entre la organizacion espacial de las viviendas y las representaciones y practicas sociales de los habitantes de la parroquia. EnglishThis article seeks to contribute to the knowledge of the society of the former Province of Maracaibo, by studying the material culture in the rural parish of La Inmaculada Concepcion de La Canada during the first half of the 19th century, at the scale of the built space of domestic dwellings. Understanding material culture as the tangible expression of culture, active in creating meaning and in the constitution of social relations, the constructive, functional, formal and syntactic typologies of the domestic dwellings of the parish are investigated, and the mutually constitutive relationships between the spatial organization of the dwellings and the representations and social practices of the inhabitants of the parish are analyzed.
